Hannah: A Mothers Day sermon
1 Sam 1-2
The ideal mother will look and act like Hannah.
Hannah was not perfect, but many of her attributes are in quality
mothers.
They were worshipping people before they had children (1:3,
5)
This speaks of both parents
Her husband worshipped regularly, yearly in their case.
Christian husbands are to set the pace for the family, not the
ladies.
Many ladies have done well despite the slackness of their husbands
But it is much harder
It is certainly not advisable, young people, to start life this way.
She was a woman who was loved by her husband.
Woman who will be great mothers are women who are sequrely loved.
They have no doubts about their husbands feelings
They have husbands who are following Gods commands:
Ephesians 5:25 Husbands, love your
wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;
Colossians 3:19 Husbands, love your
wives, and be not bitter against them.
They are women who follow Gods commands toward their husbands.
Ephesians 5:22 Wives, submit yourselves
unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.
Colossians 3:18 Wives, submit yourselves
unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord.
She was a woman who brought her sorrow and pain to God
through prayer.
The first we see her worshipping, she is bring her heart before God.
Note these verses, 1 Sam 1:10, 13
She was in bitterness
She wept sore.
She believed God knew the anguish of her heart
She prayed quietly & fervently. She made to wild display.
Note verse 11.
She makes a personal vow.
If you will give me a son, I will give him to you all his life.
This was the answer to her need and shame.
Note in verse 12 that she continued to pray.
It is now a short prayer.
It was a personal prayer she repeated over and over before God.
She did not do so to get peoples attention
She was a woman who worshipped God, whether he blessed her
or not.
Verse 19 points out that she and her husband continue to honor God,
whether she got what she asked or not.
Our worship to God should not be contingent of his blessing us.
If we are forgiven, he has blessed us.
We should honor him on that basis only
If he choses to bless us, good.
If not, good too.
Job 1:21 And said, Naked came I out of
my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath
taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.
She was a woman who kept her promise when the Lord blessed
her. Note v. 23-28
She did not return to the House of God for one year, but continued
to care for the young child by keeping him at home.
She had the support of her husband in this decision.
It appears that as soon as she had weaned him, she brought him to
Eli the priest to begin serving God.
All people are to keep their promises to God.
